The entire County Council offers our prayers and deepest sympathies to the family of Lt. Richard Collins III, a Bowie State University student who was killed in a violent attack on the campus of the University of Maryland this weekend.

Lt. Richard Collins III, planned to graduate from Bowie State University on Tuesday.

Law enforcement at every level is involved, including the FBI, which is investigating this heinous murder as a potential hate crime.

Our entire Prince George’s County community, while deeply shocked and saddened by this senseless act, must fully embrace the strength of our diversity and stand united against every form of hate and violence.

As an officer in the United States Army Lt. Collins dedicated his life to ensuring the safety of all our citizens and protecting this nation from her enemies, both foreign and domestic.

Law enforcement is conducting a full investigation of this matter to ensure justice is served.
