STATEMENT - CHAIR DAVIS ON COUNCIL APPROVAL OF HOSPITAL LAND USE AND FUNDING LEGISLATION

The Prince George’s County Council, during session on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, enacted Council Resolution 34-2017, and Council Bill 51-2017, legislation proposed by County Executive Rushern L. Baker, III, focusing on the new Regional Medical Center’s financing and land use respectively.

Council Chair Derrick L. Davis (D) – District 6, issued the following statement in response to today’s Council action.

“We are nearing the end of a very long road. Today’s Council approval of two critical pieces of legislation, CR-34-2017 and CB-51-2017, moves us much closer to breaking ground for construction of the new Regional Medical Center in Largo, modernizing our healthcare facilities and providing the services residents need. CR-34-2017 approves a $208 million multi-year financing agreement to fund the County’s portion of the new Regional Medical Center. CB–51-2017 transfers Laurel Regional Hospital and Bowie Health Care System land to University of Maryland Medical Systems (UMMS) with exemptions. Over the last six years, stakeholders have worked in a strong and unique collaboration, to maintain a joint commitment to address the healthcare needs of residents, especially as the County moves from the Dimensions Health Care System to UMMS. We will continue that work until construction is completed and the new Regional Medical Center opens its doors.”
