As a second-term County Councilwoman, Mary Lehman's top priorities are adopting public campaign financing for future county council and county executive elections; strengthening the public school system; passing robust environmental policies to reverse climate change; investing in our workforce by increasing the minimum wage to $15; and promoting government transparency and accountability. 

In 2018, Councilwoman Lehman is the Chair of the council's Health, Education and Human Services Committee and also serves on the Public Safety and Fiscal Management Committee and the Transportation, Housing and Environment Committee (THE). It marks Ms. Lehman's eighth year serving on THE, a committee that she has chaired twice. 

Outside the council, Ms. Lehman serves on the county's Conference & Visitor's Bureau and she chairs the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government's Climate, Energy & Environment Policy Committee. She also was selected as a member of the 2018 Class of Leadership Greater Washington, a program that connects leaders from city and county governments in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Northern Virginia. Its aim is to promote regional cooperation, spark dialogue, and generate solutions to regional challenges.

A former civic activist and political journalist who covered Congress, Councilwoman Lehman previously worked as a legislative aide in Annapolis, and as District 1 education liaison. She is a native of Prince George's County. 

Ms. Lehman is a graduate of Eleanor Roosevelt High School, and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from the University of Maryland College Park (1987). She is a member of St. Mary of the Mills Catholic Church in Laurel where she lives with her husband and four children.
