Wanika B. Fisher, Esq. was elected to her first term on the Prince George’s County Council in the November 2022 General Election and represents Councilmanic District 2. Council Member Fisher is the proud daughter of immigrant parents of Nigerian and South African, South Asian descent. Her interest in politics began as a child distributing petitions to build neighborhood sidewalks for children to walk safely to school. She broke barriers as the 1st, first-generation African immigrant to be elected from Prince George’s County in 2018. A former Maryland Delegate representing District 47B since 2019, she was the highest-ranking freshman in the Maryland House of Delegates, elected to serve as the Assistant Majority Leader. She proudly sponsored the Right to Counsel legislation, giving tenants access to counsel in eviction proceedings, and championed bills on labor trafficking, environmental rights, and immigration reform. Serving on the House Judiciary Committee, she worked to ensure safe communities and criminal justice reform as a priority and was appointed to several legislative workgroups - The Study Group on Economic Stability, the Marijuana Legalization Work Group, and the Work Group to Address Police Reform and Accountability in Maryland. Council Member Wanika Fisher, Esq. is a private attorney with a focus on criminal defense. She earned her Bachelor of Arts, with honors, in Government and Politics and African American studies from the University of Maryland College Park, and her Juris Doctor from the Pennsylvania State University, Dickinson School of Law.
