The Biggest Winner

The 3rd round of “The Biggest Winner” Weight Loss Competition Program, a health initiative targeting obesity in the local church, kicked off on April 24th with three new participant congregations from faith communities in North County.

The stimulus for the pilot program, entitled “The Biggest Winner,” is a study linking regular churchgoers and obesity. The 1st round of the competition, which included the health ministries from three churches located in Central Prince George’s County, experienced a total weight loss of over 1,000 pounds.  The 2nd round featured congregations from South County who lost a combined total loss of over 1500 pounds!

The 60-Day Pilot Program
The 60-Day Program is designed to challenge congregations to get fit in 2016! In Prince George’s County, over 50% of children and 70% of adults are considered overweight or obese. According to a study conducted by the Northwestern School of Medicine, young adults who regularly attend religious activities are 50% more likely to become obese by middle age than young adults with no religious involvement.

Prince George’s County is home to over 750 churches and religious institutions facing this health epidemic. Recognizing the impact of obesity, The Prince George’s County Council, sitting as the Board of Health is committed to strengthening and enhancing obesity prevention and health programs at our churches and religious institutions to decrease the number of church goers who are overweight.
