STATEMENT – COUNCIL CHAIR CALVIN S. HAWKINS, II, EXTENDS BIRTHDAY WISHES TO PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY
The County Council, on behalf of the residents we are privileged to serve, celebrates the 325th birthday of our great Prince George’s County today, April 23rd!
Much has changed since our founding on this date in 1696, when we were separated from Charles and Calvert counties, and named after Prince George of Denmark, heir to the throne of England.
We encourage County residents to use this moment of celebration to learn more about the fascinating journey of Prince George’s County in the more than 300 years since its establishment. Today, our County is vibrant with opportunities for progress and prosperity.
A study of the significant roles that residents and communities have played in the growth and development of our County and its history, will reveal how we have grown from a rural tobacco-producing county of 30,000 in 1900, to an advanced technology population of nearly a million residents.
Prince George’s County is flush with beautiful natural treasures that stretch across our land, from Laurel to Accokeek and all points in between, and rich with diverse communities in what is now known as the most affluent and successful majority-Black county in the United States.
We welcome all to recognize the history, culture, and accomplishments of Native Americans and indigenous persons in Prince George’s County, who lived along the Patuxent and Potomac rivers for thousands of years before Europeans arrived, and to celebrate our immigrant residents who come from around the world to call Prince George’s County home, offering immeasurable contributions to our collective community story.
Due to COVID-19, many of our historic sites in the County have been closed, but we invite all to take exciting virtual tours and visit online sites including the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, the Prince George’s County Historical Society, and Experience Prince George’s , to learn more about our past and our promise. Happy Birthday Prince George’s County! We are continuing the path to a great future!
