[ARCHIVED] CHAIR DAVIS RESPONDS TO COUNTY SCHOOLS REQUEST FOR MSDE AUDIT

Council to Hold Follow-Up Briefing Monday, October 3, 2016

The Prince George’s County Council holds as its highest priority, the safety and welfare of our children and students enrolled in Prince George’s County schools.

The litany of issues that has recently come to light involving the administration of County schools and student safety has been truly shocking, horrifying, and absolutely unacceptable.

Given the current status of the County’s Head Start program and ongoing student safety issues, the plan recently announced by Prince George’s County Schools Chief Executive Officer Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell is an important step toward providing hard evidence of the measures taken to ensure that these lapses will not happen again, and that any systemic issues are identified and comprehensively addressed.

The Council continues to exercise its oversight role, insisting on a management structure and set of values that require full accountability and that will also inform future decision-making about the safety and welfare of our students.

We look forward to the next Committee of the Whole/Briefing from school officials scheduled on Monday, October 3, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., to discuss what has transpired and the system’s plan for immediate corrective action, including repairing the broken trust between County students and their parents and guardians, and Prince George’s County Schools.
