STATEMENT – COUNCIL CHAIR TODD M. TURNER COMMENTS ON CONVICTION IN HOMICIDE OF BOWIE STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT, LT. RICHARD COLLINS, III
The guilty verdict announced Wednesday in the heinous murder of Bowie State University student, Lt. Richard Collins, III, marks a significant step in the judicial process, and towards justice for the Collins family and Prince George’s County community.
In May 2017, Lt. Collins was killed in a violent attack on the campus of the University of Maryland by Sean Urbanski, now convicted of his murder. The Council congratulates State’s Attorney Aisha Braveboy, prosecutors, and law enforcement at every level for their work to investigate and prosecute this case.
The Council continues to offer our prayers and deepest sympathies to the family of Lt. Collins, who planned to graduate from Bowie State University just days before his untimely death.
We remember the Bowie State University community as well, and all who will never benefit from the full potential of a life committed to public service and tragically cut short.
As the judicial process continues, our entire community, still deeply saddened by this senseless and unnecessary act of violence, remains committed to our County’s diversity and united against every form of hate and violence.
