The Prince George’s County Council and the residents we serve continue to fully embrace the strength of diversity in Prince George’s County, and stands in solidarity with those celebrating two recent Supreme Court rulings.   

 A landmark decision on Monday, June 15th, supports workplace diversity.  The Supreme Court ruled that under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, LGBTQ workers are protected from job discrimination based on sexual orientation or transgender status, upholding rulings from lower courts that said sexual orientation discrimination was a form of sex discrimination.

Additionally, a Supreme Court ruling on Thursday, June 18th, stops a Trump Administration plan that would have ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals or DACA program, protecting nearly three-quarters of a million undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children and commonly known as “Dreamers,” from deportation.  

The ruling provides “Dreamers” with another chance at the American Dream, and Congress another opportunity to consider immigration legislation that would provide DACA recipients a viable path to citizenship or legal permanent residency.

Our LGBTQ and immigrant communities make up an integral part of the vibrant fabric of our country and Prince George’s County, and contribute greatly to our collective community story.  The Council celebrates the Supreme Court decisions protecting their rights.
