Council News Posted on September 13, 2024

Council Member Wala Blegay (District 6) will host a Mental Health Symposium at Reid Temple AME Church in Glendale, MD on Saturday, September 21, 2024. The event is in honor of Josh Miller, a beloved friend who tragically died by suicide. The symposium seeks to raise awareness, foster discussion, and provide crucial resources for individuals struggling with mental health challenges.

The symposium is in collaboration with NAMI-PG, Community Crisis Service, Inc., Black People Die by Suicide, Africans for Mental Health, Office of the Sheriff, State's Attorney's Office, Prince George's County Health Department, The Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation, CareFirst, and Reid Temple AME Church.

Jade Mathis, a renowned mental health advocate, is the event’s keynote speaker and will share personal experiences to inspire attendees to openly discuss mental wellness. The symposium will include a panel discussion on the importance of mental health education, breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness, and promoting proactive care for individuals and families.

"This symposium is more than a gathering—it's a mission to honor the life of Josh Miller by equipping our community with the tools and resources necessary to prevent future tragedies,” said Council Member Blegay. “We need to start talking openly about mental health and make sure everyone knows that help is available."

This event is open to the public and press, and all are encouraged to attend.
