District 6 Council Member Wala Blegay is proud to partner with the Sickle Cell Coalition of Maryland and Zeta Mu Chapter of Iota Phi Lambda Sorority, Inc., for the 2025 MLK Unity Day: A Service Day for Sickle Cell Warriors.

On January 20th, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Council Member Blegay and other community partners and volunteers will be packing Care Kits for sickle cell patients at Children’s National and UM Capital Region hospitals.

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder where patients often require blood transfusions. It predominantly impacts African Americans, and about 40% of Maryland sickle cell patients live in Prince George's County.

Donations for the Care Kits are being collected until January 17th. Community members are encouraged to donate toiletry items and small games, toys, and puzzles by purchasing items from the Sickle Cell Coalition of Maryland's Amazon Wishlists.

The Care Kits will be packed from 10 am to 1 pm on January 20th at UM Capital Region Health, 901 Harry S. Truman Dr., Largo, MD 20774.

Council Member Blegay will be available to speak to media leading up to and during the event.
