This Tuesday, July 16, Council will vote on a measure that approves the Council’s portion of a multi-year Memorandum of Understanding for phase 2 of the County’s P3 (public-private partnership) school construction project. The resolution, CR-63-2024, failed during a vote last week, and must be approved by the end of July to allow funding for P3 construction to continue.
District 2 Council Member Wanika Fisher will hold a press conference at 9 a.m. Tuesday, prior to the vote, to call on colleagues to support the measure. She’ll be joined by other Council Members, including Chair Jolene Ivey, as well as Maryland State Sen. Malcolm Augustine, School Board Member Pamela Boozer-Strother, and Jason Washington, PGCPS Associate Superintendent of Supporting Services.
“If this resolution fails again, the P3 deal will be in jeopardy and taxpayers could be on the hook for tens of millions of dollars,” said Council Member Fisher. “We have multiple schools on the line, including a much-needed new high school in District 2. The only way forward is to prioritize students, work through concerns and disagreements, and pass this resolution.”
The press conference will be held at 9 a.m. in the Tech Lounge on the first floor of the Wayne K. Curry Administration Building, 1301 McCormick Dr. Largo, MD 20774.
The final Council meeting until the fall will follow the press conference, starting at 10 a.m.
Council’s permanent rent stabilization bill, CB-55-2024, is also set for a final vote on Tuesday.
