County Council Elects New Vice Chair, Chair Remains in Place

On Tuesday, December 3rd, the Prince George’s County Council held its annual Gavel Exchange Ceremony where Council Member Edward Burroughs III (District 8) was elected as the Vice Chair for the 2025 Legislative Year. The Council did not elect a new Chair, as no Council Member received the requisite six votes. The previous Chair, Jolene Ivey (District 5), will remain in place. Should another vote be called during the legislative year, a new Chair could be elected.

Vice Chair Burroughs is a life-long Prince Georgian who was sworn into his seat on the Council in 2022. Prior to his time on Council, Vice Chair Burroughs spent thirteen years serving on the Prince George’s County Board of Education, starting in 2008 when he was selected by his peers as a student member in 10th grade. In 2010, he became the youngest elected official in Maryland when was elected to represent District 8 on the school board. He went on to work in the Office of the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney, leading the youth court division and developing innovative ways to steer young people away from the criminal justice system.

Chair Ivey was sworn onto the Prince George’s County Council in 2018 and served as Chair for the 2024 Legislative Year. Chair Ivey previously served two terms in the Maryland House of Delegates, where she was Chair of the Prince George’s Delegation from 2013-2014. She is a parent to five sons and a stepdaughter with her husband, Congressman Glenn Ivey, and co-founded Mocha Moms, a national support group for mothers of color.
