On Wednesday, October 29, 2025, Council Vice Chair Krystal Oriadha (District 7) will host Shades of Strength at the Oakcrest Community Center, an empowering evening dedicated to celebrating women’s resilience and facilitating conversation around three critical issues recognized each October: Domestic Violence Awareness, Breast Cancer Awareness, and Menopause Awareness.
The event, which will begin at 6:30 PM, is in partnership with the Paige Group Foundation and Community on the Frontlines. It will bring together survivors, advocates, and community members to share stories of strength and healing while advancing legislative action to support women’s health and recovery. Panelists include: Alicia Dalton, a domestic violence survivor; Brenn Chrystal, a breast cancer survivor; Dr. Elliece Smith, a menopause awareness advocate; and Michelle Houston, a breast cancer awareness advocate. The discussion will be moderated by Jacqueline Rhone, and centered on healing, empowerment, and awareness.
Vice Chair Krystal Oriadha will also announce the statewide reintroduction of the Healing Scars Act, a groundbreaking legislative effort she is championing alongside Del. Ashanti Martinez (District 22).
The Healing Scars Act ensures that survivors of domestic violence have access to comprehensive recovery care, including coverage for cosmetic treatments to heal the physical scars of abuse. The bill strengthens Maryland’s Victims of Crime Act by exploring new pathways for restitution and reparations for survivors.
“As a domestic violence survivor, I know firsthand that the scars we carry — both visible and invisible — can last a lifetime,” said Vice Chair Oriadha. “The Healing Scars Act is about allowing survivors to reclaim their confidence, their health, and their future. Healing isn’t just about survival; it’s about restoration.”
Del. Ashanti Martinez, who will sponsor the bill at the state level, underscored the urgency of this work.
“Domestic violence doesn’t just end when someone leaves their abuser — it leaves behind lasting physical, emotional, and financial wounds,” said Del. Martinez. “Our goal is to remove barriers to care and ensure that every survivor in Maryland can heal fully and move forward with dignity.”
Shades of Strength represents more than an evening of reflection — it’s a movement. By intertwining three major women’s health awareness campaigns with legislative advocacy, this event bridges the gap between storytelling and systemic change. The event reaffirms Prince George’s County’s commitment to empowering women, supporting survivors, and fostering healing across generations. Community members are invited to attend, stand in solidarity, and join the call to action for the Healing Scars Act.
