On Monday, January 5, 2026, Council Member Wala Blegay will be sworn in to the vacant At-Large Council seat. The swearing-in ceremony will happen at noon on Monday in the Council hearing room at the Wayne K. Curry Administration Building, 1301 McCormick Dr. Largo, MD with a reception to follow.
The Prince George's County Council voted unanimously to appoint Council Member Blegay to serve as Council Member At-Large, filling the vacancy created by the resignation of Calvin Hawkins. Council Member Blegay was elected to the Council in 2022, representing District 6.
Pursuant to the County Code, when there is a vacancy in the Office of a Council Member that occurs during the last year of a term, a majority of the remaining Council Members make an appointment to fill the vacancy.
The deadline for those wishing to be considered for the District 6 Council seat has been extended to 5:00 p.m. on Monday, January 5, 2026. Those interested in filling the position must be a registered voter in District 6 for at least one year and submit a statement of interest and resume using this LINK.
