Council to Vote on Federal Worker Emergency Assistance Act

On Tuesday, October 7, the Prince George’s County Council will hold a public hearing and final vote on CB-24-2025, the Federal Worker Emergency Assistance Act. Tuesday’s Council meeting will begin at 10:00 AM at the Wayne K. Curry Administration Building, 1301 McCormick Drive, Largo, MD 20774.

The bill, proposed by Council Member Wala Blegay (District 6), is designed to support the thousands of federal employees who call Prince George’s County home and who often bear the brunt of federal government shutdowns and furloughs. Maryland has consistently ranked as the state most impacted by federal worker layoffs, and Prince George’s County has one of the largest concentrations of federal employees and contractors in the nation, with more than 70,000.

The legislation provides:

• Priority hiring for laid-off federal employees for county government positions

• Incentives for local businesses that employ displaced federal workers

• Expanded food assistance programs to help families in need

“As the county with the highest number of impacted federal workers, Prince George’s must lead in supporting these families during times of uncertainty,” said Council Member Blegay. “This legislation makes clear that we stand with our workers, and we are ready to provide real resources and opportunities when they are needed most.”
