Sydney J. Harrison was first elected in 2018 to serve a four-year term on the Prince George’s County Council, representing Councilmanic District 9. He was reelected in the November 2022 General Election for a second term. In 2021, 2022, and 2024, he was selected by his colleagues to serve as the Council’s Vice-Chair. During his tenure, Council Member Harrison has been appointed to key leadership roles, including serving three times as Chairman of the Education & Workforce Development Committee, and as Chairman of the Health, Human Services & Public Safety Committee. Additionally, he has served as Vice-Chair of the Health, Human Services & Public Safety Committee; the Planning, Housing & Economic Development Committee; the Government Operations & Fiscal Policy Committee; and the Education & Workforce Development Committee. His legislative work is dedicated to improving the quality of life for Prince George’s County residents. He has sponsored and supported numerous bills and resolutions focused on education, workforce development, public safety, infrastructure, and fiscal responsibility. As a member of the Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy & Environment Committee, he has championed sustainable development and enhancements to the county’s infrastructure. He currently serves as a member of the Planning, Housing & Economic Development Committee and as the Vice-Chair of the General Assembly Committee as well as the Transportation, Infrastructure, Energy & Environment Committee. Additionally, during his tenure, Council Member Harrison was appointed to serve as the Council representative on the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and Prince George’s County Economic Development Corporation’s Board of Directors. As a member, he has participated in several trade missions to foster economic collaboration and explore business opportunities.
He is also a distinguished graduate of the 2022-2023 Leadership Greater Washington Signature Program. Before joining the County Council, in 2014, he was elected Clerk of the Circuit Court for Prince George’s County, where he led a team of court professionals, maintained case files across four major divisions, and administered key programs, including jury services, notary public commissions, business and marriage licensing, and passport applications. He also served as Vice-Chair of the Maryland Clerks’ Association and was elected to the Democratic Central Committee for the 27th Legislative District. Council Member Harrison is a former small business owner and real estate professional.
He remains deeply committed to community service, nonprofit engagement, and global missionary work. His advocacy has focused on raising awareness for domestic violence victims, supporting and feeding the homeless, and championing foster care youth. A lifelong resident of District 9, he is a member of Union Bethel AME Church in Brandywine and the proud father of his adult son, Jerrell. He currently resides in Upper Marlboro.
