Accessory Dwelling Units Task Force
What is the Accessory Dwelling Units Task Force?
The Accessory Dwelling Task Force was formed established to evaluate, guide, and support the effective implementation of legislation related to the development and use of ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units) within Prince George's County. ADUs represent a vital housing strategy to increase affordable housing options, support multigenerational living, and make more efficient use of existing residential land. The County Council recognizes the critical need for community and stakeholder voices in developing and implementing this far-reaching housing legislation.
What is the legislative history behind the Accessory Dwelling Units Task Force?
The Accessory Dwelling Units Task Force was established under CR-091-2025 to develop ideas for implementing the use of accessory dwelling units in Prince George’s County. In 2023, the Maryland General Assembly enacted SB 382 to establish an Accessory Dwelling Unit Policy Task Force to study the placement of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) on land zoned for single-family residential use. In April, 2025, HB 1466, The Maryland Accessory Dwelling Units Act of 2025, was enacted and signed into law to take effect on October 1, 2025. The Maryland Accessory Dwelling Units Act requires counties and municipalities to adopt local laws no later than October 1, 2026, authorizing the development of ADUs on land with a single-family detached dwelling units. The task force’s work is essential to ensure that state and local policies are translated into practical, equitable, and sustainable solutions. This collaborative body—comprising housing experts, planners, builders, and community representatives—will play a key role in balancing housing needs with neighborhood character, promoting economic opportunity, and fostering inclusive growth. The task force’s findings and recommendations will inform future policy decisions, ensuring that ADU legislation is implemented effectively, efficiently, and with community input.
