Wanika B. Fisher, Esq. was elected to her first term on the Prince George’s County Council in the November 2022 General Election and represents Councilmanic District 2.  She is the proud daughter of immigrant parents of Nigerian and South Asian descent and broke barriers as the first daughter of African immigrants to be elected from Prince George’s County in 2018. Wanika is also the first Asian American to ever serve on the Prince George’s County Council. She currently serves as the Prince George’s County Council Member of District 2. Wanika serves as the chair of General Assembly committee and the vice-chair of the Health, Human Services and Public Safety for the County Council. The Councilmanic District 2 covers the areas of Lewisdale, Adelphi, Langley Park, City of Hyattsville, Town of North Brentwood, Town of Brentwood, City of Mount Rainier, Chillum, Buck Lodge, Avondale, and Cool Spring. She has worked on county legislation around public safety, affordable housing, the environment, smart growth, minority businesses and more. Wanika previously served in the Maryland General Assembly from 2019 to 2022. She is a prominent private attorney with a focus on criminal defense. Wanika was the highest-ranking freshman in the House of Delegates, elected by other members of the freshman class to serve as the Assistant Majority Leader in the Maryland House of Delegates. She is the proud sponsor of the Right to Counsel legislation, giving Tenants-Access to Counsel in eviction proceedings. Wanika has championed bills on police reform, labor trafficking, environmental rights, and immigration reform. She earned her Bachelor of Arts, with honors, in Government and Politics & African American studies from the University of Maryland College Park. In addition, she earned her Juris Doctor from the Pennsylvania State University, Dickinson School of Law. She is a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
