In 2023, Prince George’s County Council Member Wanika Fisher (District 2), in partnership with Joe’s Movement Emporium, launched a series of girls empowerment initiatives, designed to provide a space for young ladies, ages 11-17, to build and grow their confidence, develop leadership skills, and embrace opportunities to achieve their fullest potential.
Held in November 2023, the Girls Barbie Empowerment Event featured a “Think Outside of the Box” career session, welcoming professionals from various industries and backgrounds to share their barrier-breaking stories and inspire participants to make their dreams a reality. Attendees participated in discussions focused on issues that directly impact middle and high school girls, including self-esteem, self-care, communication, and conflict resolution, while participating in an online safety session, financial education and career mentorship discussions.
In 2025, Council Member Fisher hosted The “Wicked: Girls Defying Gravity” Empowerment Event, designed to inspire and empower young girls through art, movement, and leadership. Hosted by Sydney Jackson, Miss Teen DC USA, the event featured an engaging lineup of activities including poetry, dance, career mentorship, and creative workshops, providing opportunities for girls to embrace their creativity, explore new skills, and celebrate their unique potential.
Both events were made possible through a partnership with Joe’s Movement Emporium, a community-centered arts organization, and features contributions from outstanding local artists and professionals.
