[ARCHIVED] PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY COUNCIL ADOPTS BOWIE-MITCHELLVILLE AND VICINITY MASTER PLAN

First Master Plan to be Adopted in Preparation of the New County Zoning Ordinance and Countywide Map Amendment

The Prince George’s County Council, during session March 8, 2022, unanimously adopted CR-018-2022, legislation completing the Bowie-Mitchellville and Vicinity Master Plan (“Bowie Master Plan or Plan”) process.

Council Chair Calvin S. Hawkins, II, commended the efforts of all involved to bring this process to conclusion.

“I want to applaud all who guided the Bowie-Mitchellville and Vicinity Master Plan process to completion, especially since this process was conducted  during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.  This brings us yet another step closer to ensuring Prince George’s County is positioned to capitalize on development opportunities that help our communities grow and thrive.”

The Bowie-Mitchellville and Vicinity Master Plan process, which began in 2020, included extensive virtual outreach, various Council work sessions, and a joint public hearing. Several written comments related to the Master Plan were also received and considered.

District 4 Council Member Todd M. Turner, and District 6 Council Member Derrick L. Davis, representatives of the planning areas in the Bowie-Mitchellville and Vicinity Master Plan, commented on the Council’s action.

“We want to thank the residents of the planning areas, the City of Bowie and both the County Council and Planning Board staffs for their hard work to move this first Master Plan forward, utilizing the recently approved new County Zoning Ordinance and Countywide Map Amendment (CMA).   The Bowie Master Plan process carefully examined existing conditions and issues in the area and creates new strategies for future development, including associated land use and transportation issues, economic development, housing, public facilities, preservation of the natural environment, and important community cultural, historic and heritage facilities and areas.”

The Bowie-Mitchellville and Vicinity Master Plan is the guiding document to address future development in the City of Bowie, Mitchellville and surrounding communities. This Plan replaces the 2010 Approved Bowie State MARC Station Sector Plan and Sectional Map Amendment, the 2006 Approved Master Plan and Sectional Map Amendment for Bowie and Vicinity and is based on Plan Prince George’s 2035.  The Plan focused on targeted areas including Bowie State University and MARC station, Old Town Bowie, the Bowie Town Center, Collington Trade Zone and the  US 3/301, MD 450, MD 197 and MD 214 corridors

The County Council will now initiate a Sectional Map Amendment (SMA) to implement the land use recommendation in the Bowie Master Plan.  For additional information, visit the Planning Department Bowie Master Plan webpage - https://www.mncppc.org/3390/Bowie-Mitchellville-and-Vicinity-Master.
