COUNCIL ENACTS LEGISLATION PROMOTING RACIAL EQUITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE IN PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY GOVERNMENT

CR-068-2022 Develops Equity Policy Framework to Inform Delivery of County Services

The Prince George’s County Council, during session on Tuesday, October 5, unanimously adopted CR-068-2022, a Resolution declaring the intent of Prince George’s County to develop an equity policy framework to promote racial equity and social justice throughout County Government.

District 2 Council Member Deni Taveras, sponsor of the legislation, explains why such disparities must be effectively addressed within County Government.

“While Prince George’s County’s strength is deeply rooted in its diversity, we cannot ignore the disparities that exist regarding ethnicity, income, disability, gender, sexual identity, and other factors.  This was especially prevalent during the height of the COVID-19 crisis and is an issue we must efficiently and effectively address.  This legislation will provide us with a strong foundation to continue working to eliminate disparities and build an even more equitable future for all County residents.”

Under the legislation, the County Council commits to examining the data needed to develop an equity policy framework that would require an equity analysis for budget and policy decision-making, as well legislation.

CR-068-2022 requires the Council’s Office of Audits and Investigations to develop a baseline report by December 23, 2023, describing the current disparities in education, employment, housing, health, general employment, land use, business owners and other measures of opportunity. Following the completion of the baseline report, the County Executive, working with the County Council, will consider next steps for the County to develop an equity policy framework to inform the delivery of all County services.
