COUNCIL CHAIR DAVIS ISSUES STATEMENT IN REMEMBERANCE OF SEPTEMBER 11
On September 11, 2001 our nation experienced an unimaginable attack which has forever changed how we view that date in history.
September 11, 2016 marks the 15th year that we continue to acknowledge and remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives that day and the countless others who were injured.
The attacks on the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, at the Pentagon in Washington, DC, and in a rural field in Western Pennsylvania are deeply etched in the common consciousness of every citizen throughout this great Country.
Among that vast number of courageous men, women and children who lost their lives on 9/11 were more than 400 police officers and firefighters. Our first responders made a difference on that day, and they are recognized in a number of cities throughout our Country with the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs. Stair Climb participants pay tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center.
The Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department will host the 2016 National Capital Region 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb & 5K Walk on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at the Gaylord National Resort and Conference Center, National Harbor, MD.
We also remember that among those killed on September 11 were 24 Prince George’s County residents whose communities included Forestville, Temple Hills, Springdale, Camp Springs, Upper Marlboro, University Park, Clinton, Fort Washington, Lanham, Capitol Heights, Landover, Oxon Hill, Forest Heights and New Carrollton. They were our loved ones, neighbors, and co-workers. Their contributions and memories remain an integral part of Prince George’s County.
In their honor, Prince George’s County dedicated a Memorial Park, located near the entrance of the Bladensburg Waterfront and Peace Cross, on September 11, 2006.
