COUNCIL MEMBER AT-LARGE CALVIN HAWKINS HOSTS NATIONAL DAY OF EMPATHY PANEL DISCUSSION FOCUSING ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE REFORM
‘Crime Hurts, Justice Heals’ Event Held in Observance of National Day of Empathy – Wednesday, March 22, 2023
Prince George’s County Council Member At-Large Calvin S. Hawkins, II, in observance of the National Day of Empathy in Prince George’s County, will host a National Day of Empathy Panel Discussion event focusing on criminal justice reform, Wednesday, March 22, 2023, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Prince George’s Community College, Proscenium Theater, 301 Largo Road in Largo.
The National Day of Empathy is a day of action to generate widespread empathy for millions of Americans impacted by the criminal justice system. On this day, Americans impacted by the criminal justice system nationwide meet with lawmakers in their state to share their stories and experiences; educate; and broaden empathy among elected representatives and community members.
The evening’s event will feature panel discussions focusing on issues surrounding preventative non-entry, violence interruption, re-entry, and family impact.
Council Member Hawkins says the Day of Empathy Panel Discussion will serve as a pathway to healing across all sectors for those impacted by the criminal justice system.
“This Day of Empathy event offers a time for the community to unite in support of residents who have been impacted by the criminal justice system, which includes not only formerly incarcerated persons, but their family members, loved ones and friends. Formerly incarcerated persons face difficult challenges, including the ability to move forward in a healthy, productive manner absent the empathy, compassion and more importantly, acts of healing provided by the community. Crime hurts, but justice heals, and that is our focus for this dynamic community discussion. I encourage all County residents to join us.”
The County Council, in 2021, unanimously supported CR-023-2021, legislation sponsored by Council Member Hawkins expressing support for the National Day of Empathy in Prince George’s County and initiatives supporting criminal justice reform.
