[ARCHIVED] COUNCIL ADOPTS LEGISLATION REGULATING TAXICAB VEHICLE AND DRIVER STANDARDS IN PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY

The Prince George’s County Council, during the final session for Legislative Year 2016 on Tuesday, November 15, adopted Council Bill 9-2016, amending the County Code to address taxicab regulations, reducing the age and mileage maximums of taxicabs approved to operate in Prince George’s County.  The legislation also creates a standard level for driver conduct and establishes uniform methods of payment.

Under the legislation, taxicabs operating in Prince George’s County must be no more than seven years old and have less than 200,000 miles. Currently, taxicabs may be no more than ten years old and have less than 300,000 miles.  CB-9-2016 would also require taxicabs to display a copy of the Passenger Bill of Rights, detailing the obligations and standards that must be met by taxicab operators, and be properly maintained.

Council Chair Derrick L. Davis (D) – District 6, says CB-9-2016 addresses requirements for taxicab drivers and the needs of their passengers.

“If you drive a taxicab or limousine in Prince George’s County, there will be a standard to uphold. CB-9 establishes eligibility requirements that will ensure passengers are provided with the best possible service, including capable drivers of modern vehicles that are clean and well maintained,” said Chair Davis.

CB-9-2016 sets standards and requirements for taxicabs to be designated as premium service vehicles that may pick up passengers at designated destination attractions, as identified and maintained by the Prince George’s County’s Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T).  Additionally, the legislation will require taxicab drivers to secure a proper license and appropriate training.
