Kick-off for Swann Road Streetscaping Project; Ribbon-Cutting for William Beanes Community Center

Prince George’s County Council Member Karen R. Toles (D) – District 7 is joining residents, the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning (M-NCPPC), and the County’s Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T), in a weekend celebration of two long-awaited community projects – the Swann Road Green Streets Improvement Project and the William Beanes Community Center renovation and expansion.

Council Member Toles shares her enthusiasm. “I am overjoyed that the Swann Road project has come to fruition, and I share the community’s excitement about the beautiful streetscape that will welcome visitors to the new William Beanes Community Center. This beautiful center, and the streetscape project together represent a total $10 million economic investment in District 7 communities, featuring enhanced safety, and programs and activities for the entire family. I am honored to have led the effort in this important community transformation.”

The Swann Road Green Streets Improvement Project includes sidewalks upgraded to meet ADA standards, a new street light, and bike lanes. Council Member Toles and DPW&T are sponsoring a Community Walk on Friday, June 16, 2017, from 4:00- 5:00 p.m., beginning at Dianna Drive and Swann Road, to kick off the project.

“The Department of Public Works and Transportation is pleased to initiate this environmentally-friendly complete street project for the residents of District 7,” said DPW&T Director Darrell B. Mobley.

Council Member Toles, residents and the M-NCPPC Department of Parks and Recreation will gather for a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly renovated and expanded William Beanes Community Center on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., at the William Beanes Community Center, 5108 Dianna Drive, Suitland, Maryland, 20746. 

"We are proud to open the newly renovated William Beanes Community Center to provide additional amenities that will improve the quality of life for the residents of Prince George’s County," said Ronnie Gathers, Director of the M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County. "The 10,000-square foot center will provide the opportunity for a greater number of programs that promote health, wellness and community," Gathers concluded.

The community center project features a 9,100-square foot addition that includes a new multi-purpose room, senior cafe lounge, fitness room, activities room and outdoor patio area. Among exterior improvements are also a community garden, tennis courts, a new gymnasium, and parking lot lighting.
