District 2 Council Member Wanika Fisher will hold a press conference this Thursday, March 21 at 12:30 p.m. to discuss her resolution that supports creation of a new state commission to study reparations to African American descendants of those previously enslaved in Maryland. The resolution, CR-005-2024, will be considered in the Health, Human Services and Public Safety Committee at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Fisher’s resolution, which is co-sponsored by the entire Council, encourages the Maryland General Assembly to establish such a commission during the current legislative session. The Maryland Reparations Commission (Harriet Tubman Community Investment Act) has been introduced in the Maryland House of Delegates every year since 2020, but the bill has not made it out of committee.
Council Member Fisher will be joined at the press conference by Linda Thornton Thomas, President of NAACP, Prince George’s County Branch and Josephine Mourning, President of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference that was established by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
