I was relieved to learn that despite the devastating fire at 15606 Everglade Lane in Bowie on Monday, which led to the destruction of 16 condo units, there were no casualties. My heart goes out to the residents affected by this tragic event, and I offer my deepest sympathies to those who have lost their homes.
Today, during a Council Proclamation Ceremony, March 2024 was designated as “Red Cross Month,” honoring all those who answer the call to help others where the need is most urgent. While the material losses caused by the fire are significant, the fact that no lives were lost is a testament to the professionalism and dedication of our emergency responders. I must also acknowledge the swift response of Bowie’s Office of Emergency Management, who promptly established a reunification center at the City of Bowie Gymnasium to assist impacted residents, and our local American Red Cross who worked to ensure displaced residents received temporary housing. We are grateful for their unwavering commitment to safeguarding and serving our residents in need.
My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected, and the District 4 Office stands ready to offer our support in any way possible. I encourage everyone to prioritize safety measures and remain vigilant in fire prevention practices to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
