“The Latino Diaspora and the Great Central American Migration” to focus on Race, Services, and Policy
Recognizing the value of diversity, immigrant services and Latino contributions in Prince George’s County, Council Member Deni Taveras (D) – District 2 will host, “The Latino Diaspora and the Great Central American Migration,” a Hispanic Heritage Conference and Celebration on Saturday, September 30, 2017, 9:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. at the University of Maryland Adele Stamp Student Union, College Park, Maryland.
The daylong event will bring together scholars, activists, journalists, practitioners, students, community members, and elected officials for a series of discussions on how to better understand and address the issues facing Latinos and Central American immigrants in Prince George's County, Greater Washington D.C., and our increasingly diverse communities across the nation.
Council Member Taveras says all residents are welcome and encouraged to attend the Hispanic Heritage Conference and Celebration free of charge.
“The Hispanic Heritage Conference and Celebration is an important opportunity to recognize the rich diversity that makes Prince George’s County great. We are going to examine and explore some of the complex issues impacting Latino communities, and I want to encourage everyone from all backgrounds to join us because enhancing our understanding of other cultures helps to break down the barriers that threaten to divide us. We look forward to an informative, enriching, and exciting day.”
Featured conference partners include Pew Research Center Director of Hispanic Research, Mark Lopez, serving as conference moderator. Civil rights leader Camila Chavez of the Dolores Huerta Foundation will share a pre-screening of clips from the PBS movie, "Dolores," and lead a workshop to discuss multi-racial coalition building; community engagement of immigrants and the children of immigrants; and the historical legacy of organizing for racial justice in the Latino community. Democracy Now journalist, Juan Gonzalez, will provide the keynote address following a screening of his highly-acclaimed documentary, "Harvest of Empire." Gonzalez will also discuss his most recent book, "Reclaiming Gotham: Bill de Blasio and the Movement to End America's Tale of Two Cities."
This event is free and open to the public. Registration is required.
