District 3 Council Member Dannielle Glaros Promotes College & Career Readiness Opportunities for Parkdale High School Students
Updated College and Career Center Unveiled; College Acceptances Announced; “Job & College Expo: What’s Next” Prepares Students for the Future
Prince George’s County Council Member Dannielle Glaros (D) – District 3, joined Parkdale High School Principal Dr. Tasha Graves-Henderson, Heart of America Foundation representatives and Parkdale High School students, in a ribbon-cutting ceremony unveiling a makeover of the Parkdale High School College and Career Center, on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, in Riverdale.
With grant support from the Prince George’s County Council, The Heart of America Foundation, in partnership with Prince George’s County Public Schools, transformed a space within Parkdale High School into a vibrant and engaging College & Career Center.
Council Member Glaros says the new College and Career Center changes the way Parkdale students plan for life after high school.
“Parkdale now has a beautiful space where students have access to information, resources and technology to help them prepare for life post-graduation. For some students, college is the best choice; others may decide to pursue non-academic goals. Whatever path students choose, the new College and Career Center is ready to help students plan for post-graduate success.”
Following the ribbon-cutting, Council Member Glaros attended Parkdale High School’s Annual College Signing Day assembly, recognizing the college acceptances of graduating seniors.
To end the day, Council Member Glaros hosted “Job & College Expo: What’s Next?” to assist Parkdale seniors still undecided about their plans after high school.
“High School graduation is incredibly important, but it is equally important for students to have a plan in place once they receive their diplomas. The high-school-to-college path is not the only option following high school, and the “What’s Next” Expo was developed to give graduating seniors who need help deciding, some ideas about what they can do after high school.”
The expo provided resources and information related to the military; trade school and apprenticeship programs; and job opportunities and college admissions.
Council Member Glaros partners with Parkdale High School to host a College and Career Fair each fall. During the annual event, students are presented with opportunities to meet with college recruiters, employers, trade union representatives and members of the military. Financial aid and resume writing workshops are also offered. Over 1,000 students and family members have participated in the District 3 College & Career Fair since its inception. The 5th Annual Parkdale College & Career Fair will take place in October 2019.
