[ARCHIVED] COUNCIL MEMBER DENI TAVERAS WELCOMES NEW SAFEWAY TO UNIVERSITY TOWN CENTER COMMUNITY

Grand Opening Event Signals Continued Progress in District 2

Prince George’s County Council Member Deni Taveras (D) – District 2, welcomed Prince George’s County’s newest Safeway to the University Town Center during the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting event on Saturday April 9, 2016.

Located at the intersection of East-West Highway (MD-410) and America Boulevard in District 2, the Safeway at University Town Center is a key component of transit-oriented development area taking shape around the Prince George’s Plaza Metrorail Station.

Council Member Deni Taveras (D) – District 2, noted the collaborative partnerships required to successfully bring the project to fruition.

“The collaboration between the City of Hyattsville, the County, ECHO Realty and Safeway has been extraordinary, and has delivered a signature amenity to the residents of Hyattsville and neighboring communities. The recession hit University Town Center hard, but we knew that the Prince George’s Plaza Metro area was primed for economic development, and the Safeway opening as an anchor, has proven that our best days are ahead.”

The Safeway project was partially financed with a City of Hyattsville $400,000 Revitalization Tax Credit and $3.1 million in financing from Prince George’s County, of which $2 million was from the Economic Development Initiative (EDI) and $1.1 million in the form of a Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) program.
