COUNCIL CHAIR AND AT-LARGE COUNCIL MEMBER CALVIN HAWKINS PARTNERS WITH RE-ENTRY ADVISORY BOARD AND MARYLAND BLACK MAYORS, INC. FOR INAUGURAL SECOND CHANCE COMMUNITY WALK EVENT

Community-Wide Event Supports Formerly Incarcerated Residents – Sunday, April 18

Prince George’s County Council Chair and At-Large Council Member Calvin S. Hawkins, II, in partnership with the Prince George’s County Council Re-Entry Advisory Board and Maryland Black Mayors, Inc., will host the inaugural Second Chance Community Walk on Sunday, April 18, at Fairwood Community Park, 12390 Fairwood Parkway, in Bowie, Maryland.   Registration and check-in will begin at 12:30 p.m. followed by the event-kick-off at 1:00 p.m.  The community walk will commence at 1:30 p.m.

The Second Chance Community Walk was created to strengthen support for formerly incarcerated residents and their families.  The day’s event will feature remarks from residents impacted by the penal system, and elected officials, pastors and advocates working to address recidivism in Prince George’s County. Nonprofit organizations and County agencies working to serve Prince George's County’s returning citizens will also be on hand to provide information and resources.

Chair Hawkins says the Second Chance Community Walk is an important opportunity to bring much-needed attention to a segment of our community that has been often overlooked.

“The Re-entry Advisory Board has been dedicated to the work of transforming the re-entry process in Prince George’s County. This is the first in-person outreach event to encourage community support and bring attention to the mission of filling in the gaps needed to help returning citizens build sustainable lives and access important resources such as housing, employment, wrap-around services and other needs.  We are looking forward to an inspiring day.”

Event participants will walk the Fairwood Community Park loop with community advocates, faith-based leaders, and neighbors.  Voter registration and COVID-19 vaccination registrations will also be offered on-site.  This event requires pre-registration. Temperature monitoring and socially distanced practices in accordance with CDC guidelines will be followed.
