COUNTY COUNCIL “SMALL AND MINORITY BUSINESS WEEK” MARCH 6 – 10, FEATURES PROCUREMENT TOWN HALL AND MINORITY BUSINESS NETWORKING RECEPTION
Series of Events Focus on Strengthening the County’s Small and Minority Business Community
The County Council will host a “Strengthening Procurement in Prince George’s County Town Hall” event on Tuesday, March 7th , and a Minority Business Networking Reception on Thursday, March 9th, during a week-long series of activities focusing on the County’s small and minority business community. Both events, held in the evening to accommodate working schedules, will be held at the Wayne K. Curry Administration Building in Largo.
Tuesday’s Procurement Town Hall will focus on County-based businesses and their experiences with the procurement process, in response to requests for more information and transparency from the minority business community.
Council Chair Tom Dernoga (District 1), says the County’s procurement process is one that demands a deeper level of engagement with County based businesses, and “The People’s Council” wants to hear their concerns.
“We are hosting this town hall because the County’s procurement process needs attention, and we want to bring all interested stakeholders to the table for a discussion concerning what is being done well, and where we might improve. It is critical that the procurement process is conducted in an open, fair and competitive environment, so everyone benefits, and our County continues to grow and thrive. I look forward to the discussion as we work together for a stronger procurement process in Prince George’s County.”
During the Council’s Minority Business Networking Reception, held on Thursday, March 9th, Vice Chair Wala Blegay, Esq. and her Council colleagues will share the Council’s vision and plans for increasing contracting opportunities for local small, minority, and women owned businesses, with an emphasis on the Minority Business Community. Representatives from Financial Services Corporation (FSC), the premier lending partner for businesses in the region, will also be on hand to provide information concerning loan and grant programs available to the business community.
Vice Chair Wala Blegay, Esq. (District 6) says it is important to provide businesses in the County with the information and resources necessary to grow and succeed.
“One of the core tenets of ‘The People’s Agenda’ is Increasing Opportunities for Minority Businesses and Nonprofits, and we intend to waste no time addressing the needs of the business community. The Minority Business Networking Reception is a part of that effort. We look forward to engaging with our local business community and working with them so they can share in Prince George’s County’s growth and prosperity.”
Vice Chair Blegay also affirmed The People’s Council’s commitment to efficiently address concerns raised during the Small and Minority Business Week events. “The People’s Council will take a proactive approach to addressing the concerns expressed at both the Town Hall and Minority Business Networking Reception, and brainstorm solutions for more efficient and effective outcomes.”
